lancDIRECTOR - a lot more
than a LANC remote control!

lancDIRECTOR looks like a remote control, but it is so much more, allowing flexibility and creativity with LANC interfaces that have never been possible.

This page details applications that show that whether in the studio, on a shoot, or in the edit suite, lancDIRECTOR can make the equipment and the workflow time efficient and cost effective.

  • Control Atomos Recorders
  • Basic LANC Remote Control for a LANC camera
  • Studio Recording with switchable off-camera storage
  • LANC Capable Camera Dual Control
  • Sony LANC Camera Stereo Control
  • Using the INPUT port for advanced features
  • What the flashing lights mean
  • Controlling TASCAM audio recorders

Control Atomos recorders

Normal LANC Remote controls (shown left) are very simple and can only send commands to cameras, To control other equipment you need the functionality of lancDIRECTOR.

lancDIRECTOR is more than a remote, it can take charge of the LANC & directly control equipment like Atomos blades.

We call this lancCAMERA mode, where lancDIRECTOR "becomes" a camera to make the LANC system work. This happens completely automatically, no switching or configration - it just works!

Basic LANC Remote Control for a LANC camera

lancDIRECTOR can be used in exactly the same way as a standard LANC REMOTE. We call this lancREMOTE mode The fact is it will do this automatically, it detects what is connected to the LANC interface and changes its behaviour to always work whatever equipment is connected.

Although this mode could use a simple LANC REMOTE, lancDIRECTOR still gives access to advanced features, like an external RECORD switch, which can be either toggle operation or logic operation, located elsewhere on the rig. You can even use this connection to connect to external equipment for record automation.

Studio Recording with switchable off-camera storage
(using a LANC capable Camera)

Using a rig with a camera recording RAW or compressed media internally to its local memory card whilst simultaneously recording on an external recorder using a high quality edit friendly codec, such as Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD.

With this dual recorder approach, you could choose to record on the Atomos recorder only, or both camera and Atomos recorders simultaneously. For example, when the camera is recording very high quality RAW data internally, the Atomos external recorder can simultaneously capture edit friendly proxy recordings. You can use the high quality Atomos recordings to minimise data storage volumes and bandwidth in Post Production but also optionally capture a RAW version of scenes that potentially require more intensive data processing for creative purposes. A user may wish to bypass compressed internal camera recordings and choose to capture external recordings only without running the camera internal recorder. With this dual recorder approach it is easy to quickly choose your preferred configuration according to needs.

This uses our unique feature called lancBRIDGE - communication between 2 LANC systems:
To record on both press record on the camera (or have an optional remote control A).
To record on Atomos only press record on lancDIRECTOR (or have optional remote control B).

LANC Capable Camera Dual Control

You need control over 2 cameras simultaneously for some shots. LANC doesn't allow two cameras to be connected together, so lancDIRECTOR has a special mode we call lancBRIDGE. It allows one-button record on both cameras, or one camera only record, without recabling.

With lancDIRECTOR its easy.
To record on both press record on the left camera (or have an optional remote control A).
To record on the right camera only press record on lancDIRECTOR (or have optional remote control B).

Note that for simplicity off camera recording is not shown in the above diagram but
Atomos recorders can be added to both LANCs for automatic control.

Sony LANC Camera Stereo Control

With a well matched pair of Sony cameras without genlock, lancDIRECTOR can achieve good camera syncronisation over short periods for stereo or syncronised shooting.

Configure as shown with both cameras switched off. Switch on lancDIRECTOR with the battery switch, both cameras will switch-on simultaneously. (once the cameras have powered up the battery can be switched off and lancDIRECTOR will remain powered from the cameras.

Experiments show that the cameras tested achieved syncronisation better than 500uS for several minutes.

Note that for simplicity off camera recording is not shown in the above diagram but
Atomos recorders can be added to both LANCs for automatic control.

Using the INPUT port for advanced features

The lancDIRECTOR INPUT port is used to enable several extra features:

  • Connect a LANC signal to enable lancBRIDGE mode, described elsewhere
  • Connect an external supply from a 3.5 to 8volt source capable of 50mA. Black / ground to screen, red / voltage to ring.
NOTE: There is a tendency to short as jacks are plugged in, so the supply should be short circuit proof. Whilst the unit has been proven to work with Atomos products at voltages below 3 volts, some connected equipment may not. A 5volt supply is recommended to maximise operation with other LANC devices.
  • Connect an external RECORD switch as shown (black and purple wires: sleeve and tip). A momentary action switch can be used to TOGGLE record, or a 2 position switch can be used for a LOGIC control. This point can also be driven from external equipment via an open-collector output - active low.

With a custom cable the input port can be used for both external power and external triggering simultaneously.
